Reminder: Help Close the EYC Saturday September 1

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

All EYC members are invited and encouraged to help clean and close the EYC beginning at 9:00 AM on Saturday, September 1.

Most projects should be finished by around noon.  There are jobs for persons of all ages, abilities, and strengths.  The EYC will provide a burger, bratwurst and hot dog lunch for those who help.  BYO chips and beverages.

The EYC’s staff have gone back to school.  The EYC relies heavily on its member volunteers to open and close the EYC each season, which helps hold down dues and makes the EYC accessible for all.  Last year over 50 EYC members — out of almost 1000 people who are members — helped close the EYC.  Please help us exceed that number this year!

The EYC needs eight strong volunteers to help with a one-hour project on the morning of Sunday, September 2.  We will meet at Death’s Door Marine in Sister Bay at 9:00 AM to load the EYC’s vertical electric boat lift onto a trailer.  We will then proceed to the EYC to unload the lift.  The lift is heavy, so wear your work boots and gloves.  EYC parents, this is a good excuse for you to get your teens out of bed early on Sunday morning.  If you are able to help, RSVP to dockside@eyc.org or phone Jay Lott (414) 322-7880.

Don’t forget the bargains on the EYC’s classified advertisements page at http://eyc.org/classified-advertising/.  Now featuring inexpensive indoor winter boat storage!

Upcoming Flying Scot Regattas

Sunday, August 19th, 2012

Traveling to regattas at other clubs is fun and is the best way to improve your racing skills by sailing against top competition.

EYC Flying Scot racers should mark their calendars for several upcoming events:

On August 24-26, the Clinton Lake Sailing Association (Clinton Lake, IL) and Flying Scot Fleet 135 will host the GLOW II REGATTA.  This fun and casual regatta features parties Friday and Saturday evening, camping on the grounds, and takes place near the winter homes of many EYC members.  For more information and to preregister, go to http://www.fssa.com/content/glow-regatta.  Questions?  Contact Eric Bussell eric@ericbussell.com phone 217-377-0661.

On September 14-16, the Carlyle Sailing Association (Carlyle, IL) will host its 42nd annual WHALE OF A SAIL REGATTA.  This multi-class regatta should feature a large fleet of Flying Scots.  Includes up to seven races, plus Saturday night buffet and live band Saturday, breakfast Saturday and Sunday, refreshments all weekend.  The Notice of Race is at http://www.csa-sailing.org/aLibrary/WhaleNOR-Sail2012.pdf.  Questions?  Contact Tom Wyman (314) 753-9183 twyman01@gmail.com.

Each winter, quite a few EYC members take their Flying Scots south for some warm weather racing.  In 2013, the FLYING SCOT MIDWINTER CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA will be hosted by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron (Sarasota, FL) on March 11-15.   If you have never sailed at Sarasota before, it’s wonderful: clean, tropical waters; consistent afternoon sea breezes; a beautiful location with a spacious, breezy pavilion; and nearby beaches and shopping,  The MIDWINTER WARM UP REGATTA will be hosted by Davis Island Yacht Club (Tampa, FL) on March 9-10.  Keep an eye on www.fssa.com for more information about each of these fun and highly competitive regattas.

420 Fundraising Campaign a Big Success

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

The EYC has completed its campaign to raise funds to purchase a fleet of eighteen 420-class doublehanded dinghies.  The campaign’s final push took the EYC over its fundraising goal of $64,420 in pledges.  Currently the amount pledged is almost $68,000!  The pledged amount, plus the amount the EYC will realize from the sale of its eight Flying Juniors, will fund the purchase of the 420s, sails and dollies without the need to spend the EYC’s operating funds.

A big thank you to everyone who pledged!  The 420s, together with their new sails and dollies, will be delivered prior to the 2013 season.  The EYC plans for this fleet to serve the EYC for a decade, for lessons, racing, and recreational sailing.

Thanks again to several people who were instrumental in raising these funds:  campaign co-chairs Scott and Duska Pearson, Scott’s assistant Joanne Shea, EYC Treasurer Deb Ritter, and fundraisers Marsella Fults, Jack O’Rourke, and Jay Lott.  Special thanks to Heather and Bill Andersen, who donated all the liquor for the fundraising gala hosted at the Pearson’s home.

Although the EYC has reached its fundraising goal to purchase the boats, additional donations to the EYC are always welcome and appreciated, and will be used to pay expenses associated with the fleet expansion, including new concrete on the pier, and additional sail and gear storage lockers.  So, if you would still like to donate, your donation won’t be turned away, and your name still can be included on the list of 420 campaign donors!  To donate by credit card, go to www.eyc.org/donate.  Or, mail a check to the Ephraim Yacht Club, P.O. Box 331, Ephraim, WI 54211.

Individual donors will be listed in the Fall Eagle’s Cry and on the EYC website.  Before the donor list is published, each individual donor will be contacted and given an opportunity to opt out of the listing or to be listed as an anonymous donor.

If you have pledged but not yet paid, you must pay prior to October 15, 2012 in order to have your name listed in the Fall Eagle’s Cry.  If you cannot remember how much you pledged, or if you are not sure if you have already paid your pledge, contact EYC Treasurer Deb Ritter treasurer@eyc.org.

EYC Hours and Services / Empty Your Locker / Lost and Found

Tuesday, August 14th, 2012

Most of the EYC’s programmed summer events are over, capped off with a wonderful Commodore’s Party, and strong participation in the last day of racing on Sunday, August 12.

But that does not mean that members cannot still use the EYC!  EYC lessons continue through Friday, August 17.  Swimming, cooking out on the EYC’s grills, and other non-scheduled use of the EYC’s facilities can continue as long as weather permits.  Bridge will continue as scheduled through September 25.

The club will remain open, with staff, from 9 AM until 5 PM daily through Sunday, August 19. Qualified EYC members can use EYC sailboats during those hours; please call the EYC ahead of time to confirm availability.  Private lessons are also available during those hours by appointment.

After August 19, the pier and crane can still be used, and the clubhouse can be opened in case of need by contacting dockside@eyc.org.

Members are requested to empty their lockers and remove padlocks by the end of the day on August 19.  You can also empty your locker on the morning of Saturday, September 1.  After September 1, any remaining padlocks will be removed and locker contents donated to charity.

On August 20 any items remaining in the EYC’s lost-and-found bin will be donated to charity.

This Week at the EYC August 11-17

Friday, August 10th, 2012

It’s the last week of the EYC’s short, but intense, summer season!  Please make the most of it by attending the Commodore’s Party and the EYC’s annual membership meeting.

The EYC’s ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERS will be at the EYC clubhouse at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 11.  If you are a Family, Single, Senior or Life member, please attend the meeting so that we can have a quorum to elect four new members of the Board of Directors and to conduct other official EYC business.  The Annual Meeting is also one of many opportunities for the EYC’s members to provide feedback and ask questions of the EYC’s Directors and officers.

Help end the EYC’s social season in style! Come to the COMMODORE’S PARTY, Saturday, August 11 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the pavilion by the ballpark at the Sister Bay Sports Complex.  EYC members and guests of all ages are welcome at this EYC fundraiser!  Bring your favorite appetizer; the EYC supplies wine, beer, and soft drinks. Admission is $15 (adults and children age 9 and older) or $8 (age 8 and under). Your personal check is preferred.

Directions: from Hwy. 42 in Sister Bay, take ZZ east to Woodcrest Road. Turn left and park by the ball field, or go in the main entrance and park by the tennis courts.

There are some CHANGES TO THE RACING SCHEDULE as a result of the annual meeting.  The Flying Scot races normally scheduled for the morning of Saturday, August 11 will be held instead on the morning of Sunday, August 12.  The Optimist races normally scheduled for the morning of Sunday, August 12 will not be held.  The last races of the EYC’s 2o12 season will be the Laser and Flying Junior races on the afternoon of Sunday, August 12.

The DEADLINE TO ENROLL IN SESSION F SAILING GROUP SAILING LESSONS is noon on Sunday, August 11.  Session F lessons begin Monday, August 13 and run through Friday, August 17.  This one-week session is a good way to introduce a new sailor to the sport at a lower cost, or to provide additional lesson time to a student who has already taken lessons in 2012.  The EYC has a limited number of instructor staff available during this week, so enroll now before your preferred lesson level and time are full!  For more information, and to enroll, go to www.eyc.org/lessons.

The Ephraim Yacht Club is a family oriented non-profit organization focused on forwarding sailing education and racing to students of all ages located in the town of Ephraim, in Door County, Wisconsin on beautiful Eagle Harbor.
