Adult Group Lessons now Available in One Week Sessions - 2007

Friday, July 13th, 2007

There is a great deal of interest in the new Adult Group lesson program.  However, one consistent comment is that two weeks is hard for adults to commit to.

Well, we listen and are now offering the Adult Group lessons in 1 week sessions starting next Monday July 16 at 1:30.  They are offered in the afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30 Monday through Friday for the next 4 weeks.  The weekly rate is $180.  Call the club now and talk to Hugh or David to sign up!

Hugh O’Reilly Haggerty hails from Dallas Texas but calls Galveston home. He is 23 and attends Texas A&M Galveston. He is involved at the Corintian Sailing Club and Fort Worth Sailing Club along with the EYC. Hugh is on the Texas A&M Galveston Varsity Sailing Team and has been captain for 2 years. He is also the Development Coordinator for the South Eastern Intercollegiate Sailing Association. His favorite ice cream flavor is Mackinac Island Fudge and he prefers the C&C for dining in DC. He is a true Texan and says “it’s always bigger in Texas”! This is Hughs fifth year at the club and second as Director. We wish to especially thank him for all the extra off season time he spent helping us get ready!

US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar at Milwaukee Yacht Club - May, 2007

Friday, March 30th, 2007

The US SAILING Safety At Sea Seminar will be presented by the Milwaukee Yacht Club on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 1700 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, Milwaukee.

The daylong seminar is open to all cruising and racing sailors, crews and their families, recreational power boaters, as well as commercial fishermen. The seminar, designed and conducted by sailors who are all experts in their fields, will provide novice and experienced mariners with information and skills required to prepare for sailing offshore, boat preparation, handling heavy weather, recommended safety equipment, and emergencies at sea.

The program, endorsed by CRUISING WORLD and SAILING WORLD Magazines and sponsored by West Marine, and Landfall Navigation has evolved from the highly successful program developed by the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. It will incorporate the latest techniques and information available. Demonstrations will include “Quick Stop” and man-overboard recoveries and flare procedures. Lecture topics also include life-raft inflation, crew preparation and safety, preventing medical emergencies, hypothermia and personal flotation devices.

The United States Coast Guard is scheduled to dispatch a HH-65 helicopter from Air Base Traverse City for helicopter evacuation demonstration. Captain John Bonds, USN Ret. will be the moderator. Captain Bonds is a
nationally recognized Safety at Sea educator. Among those making presentations will be: John Rousmaniere, whose books include The Annapolis Book of Seamanship; a representative of the National Weather Service from Sullivan discussing National Weather Service products for sailors in Wisconsin and; Christopher Coleman, Senior Captain of Lake Express LLC who will discuss issues encountered when recreational boaters and commercial traffic share the same water.

The program will run from 8:00am to 2:30pm. Tickets are $115 before May 1, 2007 and $125 thereafter. The fee covers lectures, demonstrations, exhibits, course materials and lunch.

There is limited seating and advance ticket purchase is strongly advised. For more information call 414-271-4455 or go to http://www.milwaukeeyc.com/index.cfm?content=sailingevents_details&eventid=264
