Malcolm D. Vail, Sr. Elected to Hall of Fame

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

EYC member Malcolm D. Vail, Sr. has been chosen as the 2012 inductee to the Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation Hall of Fame.

“Skipper” Vail was  founding member of the EYC and served at least four terms as Commodore in the 1930s and 1940s.  He was an active sailboat racer and cruiser, competing in many events, in both dinghies and offshore racers, all over the Great Lakes.  He was involved in EYC sailing as a competitor, volunteer, teacher and parent for many decades until his death in 1976.  Many EYC members retain vivid memories of Skipper’s unique instructional style, and his emphasis on safety and good seamanship.  Many of his descendants remain involved in the EYC to this day.

A ceremony of award will be held at the EYC at 6:00 PM on Saturday, June 16.  All EYC members are invited and encouraged to attend.  The ceremony will be just a few minutes and will be followed by the EYC’s Fyr Bal Family Cookout and viewing of Fyr Bal bonfires.

EYC News

Fellow Ephraim Yacht Club members,

George Kraemer, the EYC’s Commodore elected in August 2011, unfortunately had to resign from that office for health reasons.  George has contributed greatly to the EYC as a member of the Board of Directors, as Dock Committee chair, and for the past two years as Vice Commodore.  I know that all EYC members join me in thanking George for his hard work and effective leadership, and in wishing him a speedy and complete recovery.  George will remain on the Board of Directors and we look forward to his continued participation in EYC governance.  We hope to see him and his wife Carole frequently at the EYC this summer.  We are also fortunate that Carole will stay on as head of the First Mates.

The EYC Board of Directors has named me Commodore.  As an avid sailor and racer, life-long member of the EYC, and former sailing instructor, I welcome the challenge.  Thanks to volunteers like George, the EYC is in great shape.  I look forward to working with all of you to continue to improve the EYC.

The Ephraim Yacht Club is what its members make of it.  Feedback, constructive criticism, ideas and suggestions from members are always welcome; also very welcome are offers to work to implement those ideas and suggestions.  Contact any officer, Director, or committee member by going to www.eyc.org/contactus.  You can contact me at (414) 322-7880 or jaylott01@gmail.com.

Here’s looking forward to a safe and fun 2012 season!
