Passing of Bill Claypool

It is with sadness that we share the passing of longtime EYC member Bill Claypool on February 8, 2017. Bill is survived by Jamie, his wife of 28 years, his daughter, Lianna (age 17), his son, James (age 12), as well as his mother, Virginia Claypool, and sisters, Nancy, Sandra, and Carol Claypool. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 13, 2017 at noon (with visitation from 10:00 a.m. to noon) at Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 26401 West Ann Arbor Road, Plymouth, MI 48170, telephone (734) 459-2250.

The EYC extends its sympathy to the entire Claypool family.

Raise a pint for a an evening of Irish festivities to raise money for the EYC Aaron R Moore Sailing Scholarship Fund! We are excited to be joined for the evening by The Chicago Irish Band. Members of their group have recorded or toured with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, & The Black Crowes, among many other recognizable artists. They also have Grammy award winning talent in their group! In the fall of 2012 the Ephraim Yacht Club and the Moore family established the EYC Aaron R. Moore Sailing Scholarship Fund. The mission of this fund is to promote and provide scholarships for sailing instruction and activities to the children of Door County. EYC believes that sailing is a lifelong sport that teaches many enduring principles. To date, the Scholarship Fund has granted 158 scholarships. We hope that you will support this cause by attending this fabulous fundraiser! If you cannot attend, please consider donating to the Scholarship Fund. We hope that we can count on your support to help put these kids on the water. ​​

EYC loses former longtime member

Sunday, January 29th, 2017

David F. Mulliken of Sister Bay peacefully died on Jan. 20, 2017, one day shy of his 98th birthday. He is survived by his son Hugh & Alicia (Wilson) Mulliken, daughter Amanda (De Witt) Mulliken, three granddaughters, two grandsons, and three great grandchildren.  Members recall that David would single-hand a sailboat as recently as 10 years ago.

Passing of Janey MacNeil

It is with sadness that we share the passing of longtime EYC member Janey MacNeil on Jan 22nd, 2017. Janey leaves behind Doug, her husband of 52 years, and her children Cog (Marion) MacNeil, Tracy (Alby) Gallun, Michael (Beth) MacNeil and Amy (Devin) Wolf and her 12 grandchildren: Penn, Grace, and Charlie MacNeil; Fritz, Peter, Lucy, Robert and Gunnar Gallun; Reagan Freewalt; and Parker, Mac and Gus Wolf. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 12:00 PM at Lumen Christi Catholic Parish in Mequon, WI. A reception celebrating Janey’s life will follow.

A memorial service will also be held in Ephraim, WI this summer.

2017 Summer Staffing

The EYC is immediately accepting applications for Junior and Senior instructors. This year, EYC lessons are offered from June 19 through August 18, 2017, with mandatory staff training taking place the week of June 19. Instructors need US Sailing Level 1 certification, minimally. These courses are offered in the spring around the country. If interested, please send an email, including your sailing experience, and resume to Commodore Sibylle Tasker at commodore@eyc.org by January 31, 2017. If relevant, please include any references with complete contact information.

Think Sun and Sailing!

Yes, it’s almost early bird time! Family, single, and senior memberships will be discounted through February. Don’t delay; take advantage of the savings. In the next few days, you will receive an email from Club Express, our membership software program. The email will include a direct link to Club Express. Please log in using your username and password and update any changes with your personal information. As you continue to move through the pages, you will have the opportunity to make a donation to the EYC or purchase an additional directory. Near the end, you will see a payment for your dues. Finalize your renewal by making a payment with your credit card and clicking submit payment. Or you may print a copy of the invoice and mail a check with the balance due to Club Express, 1930 Thoreau Drive, Suite 155, Schaumburg, IL 60173.

We are looking forward to seeing you again this summer!

Renewal Season

Mid January begins our membership renewal season.   Once again, our club will offer the “Early Bird” discount for renewals from mid January through February.   Please contact jhoyerman@gmail.com if you have questions about your membership.

2017 Summer Staffing

Thank you to all our volunteers and staff for another fantastic summer season! We were blessed with lots of wind, great weather, wonderful programming, and successful fundraising and events. You were all valuable members of our EYC family and we thank you again for your commitment to the EYC!

For the 2017 season, we are immediately accepting applications for EYC Club Director, Head Instructor and Race Coach. If you are interested in being considered for any of these positions, please submit an application to Commodore@EYC.org stating your qualifications as they relate to the respective job description and requirements below. If relevant, please include any references with complete contact information.

All applications are due by Saturday November 26, 2016.

CLUB DIRECTOR

• The Sailing Director is a manager whose primary task is to make sure the EYC’s operations run smoothly, that member needs are met, and that assigned tasks are accomplished.

• The Sailing Director is responsible for implementing all EYC policies, upholding EYC standards of quality, and performing all tasks assigned to him/her by the Commodore or committee chairs.

• The Sailing Director must be organized, able to delegate to others, keep track of tasks assigned to others, and follow up to make sure they are done. The Sailing Director must keep track of tasks assigned to him/her, prioritize them, and report when completed to the appropriate person.

• The Sailing Director should plan ahead and anticipate needs and tasks, so as to be proactive and not reactive, and to make sure the necessary personnel, equipment, and supplies are ready on time.

• The Sailing Director will take overall responsibility for the maintenance of all club equipment, working in conjunction with and under the authorization of the Equipment Chair. Maintains list of repair needs and assigns staff to make repairs. Purchases necessary parts for club equipment.

• The Sailing Director is the face of the EYC and is responsible for meeting member requests and prospective member inquiries.

Requirements: Competency with EYC software and documents. Thorough understanding of EYC programs and operations. Strong leader with efficient follow-through. Able to effectively communicate and work with a wide-range of constituents. Demonstrated sailing and racing competency.

HEAD INSTRUCTOR
Coaches staff regarding the implementation of EYC lesson programs, particularly on the water. Advises on curriculum from course descriptions in staff manual through daily lesson plans. Mentors staff where improvement is needed in class, including but not limited to, powerboat and sailing skills, interaction with students, and developing lesson plans. Assigns staff to classes together with the Education Committee Chair.

Requirements: Has personally taught most, if not all, levels of classes offered at the EYC (or comparable levels at similar sailing club). Has demonstrated a very high standard of boat handling skills and racing experience and knowledge. Respected by peers. Proven mentoring skills. Ability to work effectively and constructively with peers, superiors, parents, and students.

Desirable: US Sailing Level 3 Certification

RACE COACH

Enthusiastic staffer who encourages race development and participation among other staff, students, and club members. Leads staff training and coaches staff in race management, race coaching, racing rules and racing instruction, and will serve as a key resource to provide specific instructions and/or examples of how to do things. Responsible for advising improvements to race management and race documents, then implementing as authorized by Race and Regatta Chair. Monitors race management by collecting feedback, reviews that racing results have been recorded properly, and assesses that race management equipment is maintained in good condition.

Requirements: Has demonstrated a very high standard of boat handling skills and racing experience and knowledge. Familiar with all racing rules and protest procedures and can serve as judge for club races and regattas.

Passing of EYC Member Olivia Dahl

Thanks to everyone who helped close the EYC on the morning of Saturday, September 3rd! We had a great turnout and were able to accomplish everything on our work lists. Thanks to Jodi Hoyerman for providing the lunch and for trimming the bushes in advance of the work day!   Also, thanks to Jennifer Ikeda-Faugust for providing drinks and to Sue Lewis for the dessert!
